A PLACE WORTH KNOWING
Big skies, sandy toes and a view of Burgh Island
A broad sandy beach at the Avon estuary, with surf, dunes and lovely views across Bigbury Bay. Pair a beach wander with the village pub or car-park food vans.
The lane through Bantham leads to a beach that makes a whole day feel possible: broad sand, dunes and the silhouette of Burgh Island across the bay. Bring a picnic, make time for a coast-path wander or simply find a spot to watch the waves. There are useful stops around the village and beach approach, including The Sloop Inn, Bantham Stores and the Gastrobus food vans; each has its own feature and opening pattern. This is an estuary as well as a surfing beach, so check conditions and speak to the lifeguards before entering the water. For a quieter visit, leave space in the plan for a walk and something warm to eat rather than relying on every seasonal outlet being open.

Make a little plan.
Getting there
Approach through Bantham village along narrow lanes and use the estate beach car park. Continue over sand and dunes to the beach; allow for uneven, soft ground.
Before you set off
No beach booking is listed. Arrange beach-wheelchair hire with the estate and book any lessons or meals directly with the operator.
Parking
Paid, contactless-only parking. From July 2026 the estate lists £12 all day, £9 after 1pm and £6 after 4pm; prices can change. Check the gate closing time on arrival—there is no overnight parking.
Check the detailsDogs
The River Beach allows dogs year-round; the main beach has seasonal restrictions. The estate’s pages currently disagree on exact summer dates, so check the signs and ask the gatekeeper.
Check the detailsWater & lifeguards
There can be dangerous currents at the Avon mouth. Check RNLI patrol dates and local flags; swim or bodyboard between the red and yellow flags when lifeguards are on duty.
Check the detailsBeach wheelchair
The estate offers free TerraWheel beach-wheelchair hire by advance email arrangement. It is for sand and land use, not entering the water.
Check the detailsDetails checked 25 October 2026. Opening times, menus and access arrangements can change; confirm anything essential directly before travelling.
