A PLACE WORTH KNOWING
A secret garden slowly coming back to life
Weathered stone, leafy passageways and an unusual Italian-inspired garden hidden in the lanes near Ipplepen.
Great Ambrook is the kind of garden that rewards a deliberate journey. Hidden in the countryside near Ipplepen, its early twentieth-century Italian-inspired design is being recovered through patient restoration. Stone steps, old walls and leafy passages create a quieter, more intimate atmosphere than a large formal garden. Look closely at the relationship between the architecture and the planting, rather than expecting everything to be polished and finished. Seasonal self-guided openings offer a gentle way in; a pre-booked volunteer-led group tour adds the history behind the layout. This is a planned visit, with opening dates to check before you take the country lanes.
