For a day out with a slightly unexpected flavour, turn off the road near Loddiswell and follow the giant chilli sign. South Devon Chilli Farm makes a visit out of growing, tasting and discovering what these colourful plants can do. Browse the nursery and shop, work your way through the available samples and look for a sauce, chocolate or plant to take home. The growing displays follow the seasons: the show tunnel is usually available from May to November, while the selection of fresh chillies changes with the harvest. Children have their own small play village, so this can work as a family stop as well as a pilgrimage for enthusiastic cooks. Bring a picnic if you want to linger; the farm advertises snacks and cold drinks rather than a full café meal.

About a mile outside Loddiswell on the B3196. Look for the big red chilli sign; free parking includes disabled spaces.
