A PLACE WORTH KNOWING
Wood grain, quiet forms and beautiful everyday objects
Handmade wooden homeware from Kaori Takahashi and Mark McGilvray’s Sea Change studio.
Takahashi McGil is a place to slow down and look closely. Kaori Takahashi and Mark McGilvray make functional wooden objects, combining Japanese traditions with western techniques in their Cockington studio. Local or sustainably sourced hardwoods become bowls and other homeware, with carving and finishing that make the surface as interesting as the silhouette. Their work includes urushi, a traditional lacquer made from tree sap. The studio offers pieces to view and buy directly, while the online collection gives a useful introduction before visiting. Choose it for thoughtful browsing rather than a rushed souvenir hunt, and email ahead: craft events and sourcing trips can take the makers away from the studio.
